Graduate Degree Programs and Requirements

There are four graduate degree programs in the Chemical Engineering Department. These are:

  1. The Master of Science, non-thesis option, program, which requires advanced course work and real world lab experience, and allows ample opportunity to specialize in a chosen area of Chemical Engineering.
  2. The Master of Science (with thesis) program, which requires advanced course work and research experience, including a thesis, and provides preparation either for further education or for industrial work.
  3. The Master of Engineering, a non-thesis program, intended for those without an accredited Chemical Engineering Bachelor's degree and for off-campus students.
  4. The PhD Program, which involves in-depth study in fundamentals and practice, and significantly greater creative research effort.

Except for students who have Master's degrees from other American institutions, students will normally start on one of the Master's programs, although the M.S. degree can be bypassed by those who show satisfactory academic progress and who pass the Ph.D. qualifying exam.

The written qualifying exam is normally given at the end of the Spring semester. It is the policy of the department that the terminal degree be a thesis degree for those students with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. Financial support through departmental, contract, or grant sources (i.e., the University of Florida OPS category) will not be available to students enrolled in the Master of Engineering program.

General requirements for the various degree program as well as descriptions of courses can be found in the University of Florida graduate catalog. A student is normally regulated by the rules set forth in the catalog published in the academic year of the students first term.  The revised Graduate Program Requirements document for the Department of Chemical Engineering is now available.
